Alec Gilbert, Chief Executive Officer, Adelaide Convention Centre

Career History
I joined the Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) as Chief Executive in June 2006. Prior to that I was CEO of the International Convention Centre Durban (ICC Durban) which has on two occasions been ranked among the top ten convention centres in the world. ICC Durban also received the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) “Best Marketing Award” in 1998. At a personal level I was presented with the IMEX Academy Award in Frankfurt in 2006. I currently serve on the Board of the International conference and Convention Associaton (ICCA) and am also the chairman of the “Venues Sector” of that association.

Since arriving in Adelaide, the ACC has undergone a major rebranding exercise and developed a culture of “Gold Service – Green Attitude”. This was also recognized in Frankfurt by the IMEX Academy when the Centre was awarded gold as the most “Green supplier” in 2009. I am proud to have been associated with the “Team Adelaide” concept, and the ACC remains resolute in achieving our brand positioning statement of “Adelaide. Australia’s Convention City” .

Greatest Achievement
Still working on it!

Favourite Pastime
It used to be long distance and white water kayaking, now travelling, dining with friends and “pottering” around the house enjoying the West Lakes waterfront.

Favourite South Australian Holiday Destination
Too early to say at this stage but I do favour the coast.

Favourite Adelaide or South Australian Dining Experience
The Adelaide Convention Centre (where else?!!)

Adelaide as a Destination
Probably the proximity of everything (including many attractions) and the fact that as a smaller destination we are able to work co-operatively to enhance the delegate experience – it all combines to make up a “Brilliant Blend”!
