International Surgical Week
Profile/objective of conference:
In September 2009, Adelaide welcomed International Surgical Week – the 43rd World Congress of the International Society of Surgeons.
Attracting 1,500 attendees from 79 countries and held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, this complex event engaged a number of integrated societies and partners including the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons, International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care, International Association for Surgical Metabolism and Nutrition, and Breast Surgery International. The Congress also incorporated the 21st World Congress of Digestive Surgery.
Hosting this prestigious event had been 10 years in the making for Adelaide, and was reflective of a proactive “Team Adelaideā approach to international conventions. In 1999 representatives from the Adelaide Convention Bureau (then known as the Adelaide Convention Tourism Authority) flew to Vienna to present an official bid to the event’s executive committee, resulting in Adelaide being announced as host city in 2001. SAPMEA and Sapro Conference Management, two of Adelaide’s leading Professional Conference Organisers and specialists in medical conventions, secured the rights to manage the congress, which was successfully hosted by the Adelaide Convention Centre.
